In the 1950s, Dr Ida Rolf used a combination of Osteopathy and Yoga to develop a technique of improving posture called STRUCTURAL INTEGRATION. This technique developed a cult-like following during the 1960s and 1970s. Practiced mainly in the US, countries such as the Australia and Brazil also developed schools for "Rolfing", a nickname for Ida Rolf's work, which is also a patented name for one of schools of Structural Integration.
“Rolfing” has sometimes been described as being very painful and there have been many stories have been told about the uncomfortable experiences of being "rolfed".
KMI (KINESIS MYOFASCIAL INTEGRATION)is also one of the schools of Structural Integration which was developed by Tom Myers. Whilst some of the techniques are very similar, KMI uses the client's movement as the key to facilitate change, making it less painful. The series of movements used allow the connective tissue to adapt and change. This opens up the body whilst working below a client's pain threshold.
Overall structure is addressed in a series of sessions, which helps to eiminate pain and injury can reoccuring or resonating in another part of the body. This method was developed to EMPOWER THE CLIENT TO FEEL AND OWN FAVOURABLE CHANGES IN THEIR STRUCTURE which painful techniques and symptomatic treatments have not been able to accomplish.
Tom Myers, one of Ida Rolf’s students, has linked science to the principles of Ida Rolf's work with his "Anatomy Trains", by showing that the muscles are continuously linked and cannot be separated. While developing a more highly effective technique for change he has helped to improve the reputation of "rolfing".(Go to www.anatomytrains.net to find out more about KMI and Tom's work)
His theories and methods have been used by many movement and manual practitioners from vastly different fields worldwide. This scientific approach has helped prove that as a person's relationship with gravity improves, the body's "fascia"(fabric) must change.
Research worldwide is now revealing how our fascial systems are an integral part of all our body's functioning. This connective tissue system can facilitate long lasting change and be the prime system to change fixed patterns. History now tells us it is these fixed patterns that cause recurring problems in the body.
